As another birthday draws to a close, our family gathers for a cherished tradition. Right after our family prayer comes the moment we’ve all been waiting for: The Honoring.

One by one, we take turns speaking directly to the birthday celebrant. We share stories of how he or she has blessed our lives and express our gratitude for the beautiful future we get to share. The birthday celebrant sits at the center of it all, eagerly listening and soaking in the love and affirmation of the family who adores him.

Sometimes there’s awkwardness, sometimes we burst out laughing, a little teasing, and a lot of heartfelt messages. The finale – the most tender hug from the affirmation giver.

I could not emphasize enough how important this tradition is to our family. To feel appreciated, to feel loved, and to hear these declarations from your people. From the people who matter most. From the perfect-imperfect people who will always have your back, no matter what.

The beautiful genuine smile, the full heart, and the feeling of worthiness HONORING brings is priceless. It’s telling the birthday celebrant, “Yes, you are not perfect and you made mistakes – but you are worth loving more than ever!”

I highly encourage all parents to create your own birthday Honoring tradition at home. Keep it private, personal, and deeply family-centered. Public greetings on Facebook and Instagram are nice—but at the end of the day, nothing can ever beat the raw, intimate power of the private honoring your child receives from the people who love them most.
